The Anvil is the second mode of the crafting screen. Press **Esc**, open the **Inventory** section, pick **Crafting** and switch from **Workbench** to **Anvil**. It does two jobs: it gives a gun its lives back, and it raises a gun one rarity. Both are paid in materials, not cash.

This is not the Blacksmith's anvil. The Blacksmith reforges guns and sets stones and gems, and you can read about him on the [Reforging](https://justified.gg/wiki/items/reforging) page.

## Gun Lives

A life is a death your gun survives. Guns that carry lives show them on the item card as a count like **3 / 3**.

- Die with the gun equipped and it stays in its slot. It loses one life.
- The death that spends the last life **breaks** the gun. At **1 / 3** the card says it breaks on your next death.
- A broken gun can't fire and can't be equipped. It moves to your bag when you respawn, with a warning.
- Disconnecting in the middle of a fight with another player costs the same life.
- Mending a broken gun at the Anvil makes it fire again.

A gun with no lives works the other way. Die holding it and it drops where you fell for whoever killed you. Every other gun you had equipped is destroyed. Guns that carry lives are never dropped and never destroyed this way.

### Which Guns Have Lives

| Source | Lives |
| - | - |
| Guns bought from Hollow (not throwables) | 3 |
| Halloween crate weapons | 3 |
| Any gun you upgrade at the Anvil | 3 |
| Guns from Holt | None |
| Crafted gear | None |

Throwables such as grenades have no lives and are used up. See [Weapons](https://justified.gg/wiki/items/weapons) for where each kind of gun comes from.

## Repair

Repair gives a gun **all** its lives back. It works on any gun that carries lives and is missing at least one.

**Cost:** for every life missing, the Anvil takes materials worth **15%** of the gun's store price, the price on its item card. Three quarters of that value is **[Iron Ingot](https://justified.gg/wiki/item/iron_ingot)** and one quarter is **[Rotten Flesh](https://justified.gg/wiki/item/rotten_flesh)**. Merchants' sell prices decide the exchange rate, so the amounts move if those prices change.

Amount of Iron Ingots = 0.75 x 0.15 x price x lives missing / £517

Amount of Rotten Flesh = 0.25 x 0.15 x price x lives missing / £80

The Anvil shows the exact amounts before you hold the button.

## Upgrade

Upgrade raises a gun one rarity and fills it with **3 lives**. Only guns Holt sells can be upgraded: pistols, SMGs, shotguns, rifles, sniper rifles and light machine guns. The step depends on the gun's starting rarity.

| Starting Rarity | Becomes | Value Paid | Materials | Gate |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| Basic | Advanced | 1 x price | 75% [Enchanted Iron Ingot](https://justified.gg/wiki/item/enchanted_iron_ingot), 25% [Enchanted Rotten Flesh](https://justified.gg/wiki/item/enchanted_rotten_flesh) | None |
| Advanced | Superior | 2 x price | 75% [Enchanted Iron Ingot](https://justified.gg/wiki/item/enchanted_iron_ingot), 25% [Revenant Flesh](https://justified.gg/wiki/item/revenant_flesh) | Zombie Slayer III |

An Enchanted Iron Ingot counts as 160 Iron Ingots and an Enchanted Rotten Flesh as 160 Rotten Flesh, so each one is worth £82,720 and £12,800 at today's prices. Revenant Flesh is worth £4,000. Craft Enchanted materials at the [crafting table](https://justified.gg/wiki/items/crafting).

The gun keeps its stat rolls and its reforge. Its rarity goes up, so its [reforge](https://justified.gg/wiki/items/reforging) stats, [gem slots](https://justified.gg/wiki/items/gemstones) and gem stats read the higher rarity.

Arcane and Apex guns can't be upgraded here.

## Worked Example

Take a gun with a store price of £285,000.

**Repair, 3 lives missing.** The value is 3 x 15% x £285,000 = £128,250.

- Iron Ingots: £96,187.50 / £517 = **186**
- Rotten Flesh: £32,062.50 / £80 = **401**

**Repair, 1 life missing.** The value is £42,750, which is **62** Iron Ingots and **134** Rotten Flesh.

**Upgrade, Basic to Advanced.** The value is £285,000.

- Enchanted Iron Ingots: £213,750 / £82,720 = **3**
- Enchanted Rotten Flesh: £71,250 / £12,800 = **6**

**Upgrade, Advanced to Superior.** The value is £570,000.

- Enchanted Iron Ingots: £427,500 / £82,720 = **5**
- Revenant Flesh: £142,500 / £4,000 = **36**

Amounts round to the nearest whole item. The Anvil screen is always right if it disagrees with this page.

## What the Anvil Refuses

| Message | Why |
| - | - |
| Split the stack first. | The gun is part of a stack. |
| Store guns stay as you bought them. | Guns bought in the Store can't use the Anvil. |
| This gun has no lives. | Repair only works on guns with lives. Upgrading gives it 3. |
| It already has every life. | Nothing to repair. |
| It's already Superior or better. | Upgrade stops at Superior. |
| Only guns the Gunsmith sells are upgraded here. | The gun isn't one of Holt's. |
| Upgrading to Superior needs Zombie Slayer III. | You haven't reached the gate. |
| You need more (material). | Check your inventory and sacks. |

The Anvil takes the materials and changes the gun in a single save. If the save fails you keep both.

## Tips

- Repair the gun before the last life goes. A broken gun still repairs, but you're out of the fight while it's in your bag.
- Quick Sell pays less the fewer lives a gun has, so repair before you sell. See [Weapons](https://justified.gg/wiki/items/weapons#quick-sell).

## FAQ

### Do I lose a life when I get arrested?

No. Arrest moves your guns back to your bag. Only death, and leaving a fight with another player, spends a life.

### Does repair give back my reforge or gems?

Repair only changes the lives and the broken state. Your reforge, gems and enchants stay as they are.

### Can I repair a Hollow gun?

Yes. Hollow's guns carry 3 lives and repair like any other. Upgrade stops at Superior, and it only takes guns Holt sells.

### Why does my gun have no lives?

Guns from Holt and crafted gear have none. Upgrade a Holt gun at the Anvil to give it 3.
