How to Run a Garry's Mod Server
Step-by-step guides to running a Garry's Mod server, from hosting friends in-game to a SteamCMD dedicated server with Workshop addons, a GSLT and DarkRP.
You can run a Garry's Mod server two ways. Host a game from the main menu for a few friends, or install a dedicated server with SteamCMD that stays online without you.
Start with the first guide if you only want to play with friends tonight. Work through the rest in order if you're building a public server.
Host a Server for Friends
Start a multiplayer game from the main menu and let friends join through Steam.
Make a Dedicated Server
Install the server with SteamCMD on Windows or Linux and start it from a script.
Set Up server.cfg
Name your server, set passwords, a loading screen and the settings players notice.
Add Workshop Addons
Install a Workshop collection on the server and make players download the content.
GSLT and Port Forwarding
Get a Game Server Login Token, open the right ports and appear in the server list.
Install DarkRP and an Admin Mod
