Click the controller icon at the bottom right of Garry's Mod's main menu and tick each game you want to mount. You can only mount games your Steam account owns and has installed.
What Mounting Is
Garry's Mod runs on the Source engine, the same engine as Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2. Mounting tells GMod to load another Source game's models, textures, sounds and maps. Once a game is mounted, its props show up in your spawn menu and its maps appear in Start New Game.
GMod already includes the content from Half-Life 2 itself. Everything else needs the game installed.
Games You Can Mount
The main menu's list includes:
| Game | What you get |
|---|---|
| Counter-Strike: Source | Textures, props and maps that a lot of servers and addons use |
| Team Fortress 2 | TF2 props, models and maps |
| Half-Life 2 & Episodes | Content from the Half-Life 2 episodes |
| Half-Life 2: Deathmatch | Deathmatch maps and props |
| Half-Life: Source | The original Half-Life's content |
| Day of Defeat: Source | World War II maps, props and models |
| Portal and Portal 2 | Portal props and test chambers |
| Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 | Their props and maps |
| Black Mesa | Black Mesa's content |
The list has more Source games too, including Alien Swarm, Fistful of Frags, Insurgency, INFRA, Nuclear Dawn, The Stanley Parable and Zombie Panic! Source.
How to Mount a Game
Install the Game in Steam
Download the game you want through Steam. Owning it isn't enough. It has to be installed.
Open Garry's Mod
Go to the main menu. If you're in a game, press Escape.
Open the Games List
Click the game controller icon in the bottom right corner, next to the language flag.
Tick the Game
Tick the box next to each game you want. Untick it to unmount.
Games you can't mount yet show a marker instead of a tick box. Not Owned means your Steam account doesn't have the game. Not Installed means you own it but haven't downloaded it.
Mount games from the main menu before you start a map or join a server. GMod remembers your choices next time you open it.
Why Counter-Strike: Source Matters
Counter-Strike: Source is the game most worth mounting. Many maps, gamemodes and addons reuse CS:S textures and props instead of shipping their own. When a server uses them and you don't have CS:S mounted, walls and floors turn into purple and black checkerboards. Props that are missing show as big red ERROR signs.
Some gamemodes say so on their Workshop page. The Murder gamemode, for example, needs CS:S owned and installed.
You Need to Own It
GMod mounts content from your own Steam games only. Buy Counter-Strike: Source on Steam, install it, and tick it in the games list.
If you've mounted CS:S and still see checkerboards or ERROR signs, the missing content comes from somewhere else. Fix Missing Textures walks through finding and fixing it.
Mounting and Servers
Mounting happens on your PC. If a server's map uses TF2 props, you need TF2 mounted to see them, even if the server has it.
Running your own dedicated server is different. The server needs its own copy of each game and an entry in its mount.cfg file. That's a job for the server owner, and players don't need to do it.
Common Questions
No. Garry's Mod already has Half-Life 2's base content. You only need the Half-Life 2 entry for the episodes' content.
Check it's installed in Steam, not only sitting in your library. Then tick it in the games list.
You can join without mounting, but you'll see missing textures wherever the server uses another game's content. Mount Counter-Strike: Source at least.
