Hold Q, open the Saves tab and click Save Game to save the whole map. To save one build instead, copy it with the Duplicator tool and click Save Dupe. Your saves go in garrysmod/saves and your dupes in garrysmod/dupes.
Saves and Dupes Are Different
| Save | Dupe | |
|---|---|---|
| What it keeps | The whole map: every prop, NPC, vehicle and where they are | One build and everything welded or roped to it |
| How you make one | Save Game in the spawn menu | The Duplicator tool, then Save Dupe |
| How you use it | Load it and the map goes back to how it was | Paste it anywhere, on any map, as many times as you like |
| Where it works | Single player, or as an admin on a server | Wherever the server lets you use the Duplicator |
Save Your Game
Open the Spawn Menu
Hold Q.
Open the Saves Tab
Click Saves in the tabs along the top of the spawn menu.
Save
Click Save Game. GMod saves the map and takes a screenshot to use as the save's picture.
In single player, you can save whenever you like. On a multiplayer server, only admins can save, and only once every 10 seconds.
Load a Save
You can load a save from two places:
- In game, hold Q, open Saves, hover over the save and click load.
- From the main menu, click Saves, open My Saves and click load on the save.
If the save is from a different map, GMod asks before it changes map. Click Load to go ahead.
The Saves menu also lists saves other players have shared on the Workshop, under tabs such as Top Rated and Latest Uploads. You can publish your own saves there too.
Copy a Build With the Duplicator
The Duplicator comes with Garry's Mod. It's in the spawn menu's Tools tab, under Construction.
Copy
Aim at your build and right-click. The Duplicator copies the prop and everything constrained to it, such as welds, ropes and axes.
Paste
Aim somewhere else and left-click. A copy of the build appears.
Save the Dupe
Click Save Dupe in the Duplicator's settings, or open the Dupes tab in the spawn menu and click Save Dupe there.
To use a saved dupe later, open the Dupes tab and click deploy on the dupe. It loads into the Duplicator, and you left-click to paste. Show Saved Duplications in the tool's settings jumps straight to that tab.
Dupes from the Workshop list any Workshop addons they need. Subscribe to those first or parts of the build will be missing.
Some Servers Block It
Server owners can turn off the Duplicator. If they have, you get a message saying so when you try to load a dupe. Ask what the server uses instead.
Advanced Duplicator 2
Advanced Duplicator 2, or AdvDupe2, is a Workshop addon that does more than the built-in Duplicator. You can copy a whole area at once, save dupes into your own folders and share files with friends.
Our Advanced Duplicator 2 guide covers area copy, saving, loading and pasting.
Where Your Files Are Stored
All three live inside your Garry's Mod folder. To open it, right-click Garry's Mod in your Steam library and choose Manage, then Browse local files.
| What | Folder | Files |
|---|---|---|
| Saves | garrysmod/saves | A .gms file and a .jpg picture for each save |
| Dupes | garrysmod/dupes | A .dupe file and a .jpg picture for each dupe |
| AdvDupe2 files | garrysmod/data/advdupe2 | .txt files, in any folders you made |
On the main menu, the Saves page has an Open Saves Folder button, and the Dupes page has Open Dupes Folder.
Back Them Up
Copy these folders somewhere safe before you reinstall the game or move PC. To share a dupe or AdvDupe2 file, send the file and your friend drops it into the same folder.
Common Questions
Only admins can use Save Game on a multiplayer server. Use a dupe instead, if the server allows the Duplicator or AdvDupe2.
The build uses props from a game or addon you don't have. Subscribe to the addons it lists, or mount the game. See How to Mount Games.
No. A save belongs to the map it was made on, and loading it switches to that map. A dupe works on any map.
