Backpacks are extra bags you carry inside your inventory. Sacks are different: they hold a huge amount of specific materials, and they fill themselves as you pick things up. Both live in your inventory (press I). Backpacks sit in the Storage side slot, and sacks have their own Sacks panel.

Backpacks

A backpack is a container with its own slots. There are five sizes, and each one is crafted from the one below it.

The last column is the Leather collection tier you need before the recipe opens. The Collections menu shows your progress.

Getting Leather

The infected drop Leather when you kill them. It is the Farming collection "Leather", so every piece you pick up counts toward the tiers above. Enchanted Leather is 160 Leather pressed together at the workbench, and it needs Leather Collection II.

Crafting a Backpack

Backpack recipes are on the crafting bench under the Backpacks category. The grids are laid out exactly like this:

The full table is for players signed in to the wiki. Each item's details and recipe are on its own page, e.g. Leather; search for an item by name to find it.

To upgrade a backpack, craft the next size with the old backpack in the middle of the grid. The old backpack has to be empty and in your inventory. The upgrade keeps your backpack's name and grows the same bag.

Jumbo Backpack Upgrade

The Greater Backpack to Jumbo step needs a Jumbo Backpack Upgrade. Maddox sells it for 87 bits from his Sacks section.

Storage

Storage holds up to 18 backpacks. Open the Storage side slot in your inventory and drop a backpack into an open slot. Left-click a stored backpack to open it and see what's inside.

Only the first slot is open from the start. The rest open as you hand in lost lights to Nell the Lamplighter. Lost lights are small glowing orbs hidden around the city, and you find each one once. Nell takes them five at a time.

Storage Rules

  • Only backpacks go in Storage.
  • You can't put a backpack inside a backpack.
  • A backpack with anything inside stays in its Storage slot. Empty it before you move, drop or destroy it.
  • A stored backpack can still swap with the one you're wearing. The same rule applies to both.

You also have a worn Backpack slot, the one that draws on your character. Other items use it too, such as the Deep Sea Diver's scuba gear.

Sacks

A sack stores one kind of material in bulk. While a sack is in your bag, picking up something it holds sends it into the sack instead of your inventory slots. Anything past the sack's room goes to your inventory as normal.

  • A sack only works while it sits in your main inventory or in your Sack of Sacks. In your bank or inside a backpack, it adds no room and does nothing.
  • Sacks are untradeable.
  • Each sack gives room per material: a 640 Beginner sack holds up to 640 of every material it lists, not 640 in total.
  • Two sacks of the same type add their room together.

The full table is for players signed in to the wiki. Each item's details and recipe are on its own page, e.g. Leather; search for an item by name to find it.

Getting a Sack

Maddox crafts them in his Sacks section. Each size is made from the size below plus a pile of the type's material, and each size needs a collection tier or Slayer level before it unlocks. The shop row tells you which.

Beginner sacks also sell for £250,000 if you'd rather pay cash. There is no Beginner Slayer Sack: Slayer starts at Small.

Upgrading a Sack with Pocket Sacks

Pocket Sack-in-a-Sack costs 173 bits from Maddox. Drag it onto a sack to add twice that sack's own room. A sack takes up to three, which makes it seven times its starting size. The first one also raises the sack's rarity by one.

Sack of Sacks

The Sack of Sacks is an 8-slot panel in the Sacks section that carries your sacks without using inventory slots. It opens once you carry a Large sack of every type: Combat, Slayer, Agronomy, Mining, Fishing and Junk. Only sacks go in it. The panel tells you which Large sacks you're missing.

Taking Things Out

Do thisTo get this
Take a material from the Sacks panelA stack of it in your inventory
/gfs <item> [amount] (also /getfromsacks)That much of an item out of your sacks. Without an amount you get one stack.
Take all on a sack typeEvery material of that type, as much as your inventory holds
Insert buttonEvery material in your inventory that a sack has room for
/sacksOpens your sacks

A chat line like "[Sacks] +158 items. (Last 30s.)" sums up what went in and out. You can turn it off in Settings under Sack Notifications.

Pickup Filter

Don't want something? Choose Don't pick up on a material and it stops dropping into your inventory or sacks. Undo it from Not picking up in your inventory. You can filter up to 200 materials.

Tips

  • Get a Beginner Combat Sack first. It soaks up Rotten Flesh while you work toward your first Small Backpack.
  • Keep sacks in your main inventory, not your bank. They only count while carried.
  • Hand your lost lights to Nell in fives. Every five opens progress toward the next Storage slot.
  • Empty a backpack before you try to rearrange Storage. A backpack holding anything won't move.

FAQ

Why won't my backpack leave its Storage slot?

It has something inside. Empty it first.

Why does my sack not take anything?

Check that it's in your main inventory or Sack of Sacks, and that the sack type holds that material. Its card lists what it stores.

Can I sell what's in my sacks?

Yes. The Bazaar can sell straight from your sacks, or you can take materials out first and sell them the usual way.

Does the Jumbo Backpack need Leather?

No. It needs a Greater Backpack and a Jumbo Backpack Upgrade.
