Rare guns and knives have gem slots. A gem set in a slot adds a stat while you hold the item. You set gems at the Gemstones tab of the Blacksmith's window. Use him in person, or eat a Booster Cookie and type /anvil.

How It Works

Find rough gems. Retro Miners chip them out of ore as they mine, and Gold Diggers find them too.

Refine them. The Mine Merchant's Gemstones section turns 8 of one quality into 1 of the next. It costs only the gems.

Set a gem. Open the Blacksmith's Gemstones tab, pick your item and an empty slot, and choose the gem. Setting a gem is free and the gem is used up.

Gem Qualities

QualityHow You Get It
RoughMined
Flawed8 Rough
Fine8 Flawed
Flawless8 Fine

A better quality gives a bigger stat. The Mine Merchant buys Rough, Flawed and Fine gems. He doesn't buy Flawless.

The full table is for players signed in to the wiki. Each item's details and recipe are on its own page, e.g. Leather; search for an item by name to find it.

Gem Slots

The slots an item has depend on the rarity it started at.

RaritySlots
BasicNone
AdvancedNone
Superior1 Combat
Arcane1 Combat
Apex1 Combat, plus a second Combat slot you unlock

A Combat slot takes Ruby, Amethyst, Jasper, Sapphire, Onyx or Opal. Raising an item with a Recombobulator 3000 doesn't add slots, but its gems then give the stats of the higher rarity.

Unlocking the Second Slot

An Apex gun or knife has a locked second slot. Unlocking it costs £46,000 and 2 each of Fine Jasper Gemstone, Fine Sapphire Gemstone, Fine Ruby Gemstone and Fine Amethyst Gemstone. You unlock a slot once.

Taking a Gem Out

A slot holds one gem. To swap it, take the gem out first. The gem comes back to you, and the fee depends on its quality.

On Superior to Apex items, a Fine Onyx gives as much as a Flawless one or more.

Gem stats work while you hold the item, in fights with the infected.

Jade, Amber and Topaz

These three gems are for mining. They go in the matching slots of Power accessories, not in guns, and give half their normal stat there. Jade adds Mining Fortune, Amber adds Mining Speed and Topaz adds Pristine. They help Retro Miners and Gold Diggers.

Tips

  • Refine toward Fine first. The second slot on an Apex item takes Fine gems, so you need them anyway.
  • Pick the gem for your job. Jasper adds Strength, Onyx adds Crit Damage.
  • Don't refine Onyx past Fine for a Superior to Apex item. Flawless gives no extra there.

FAQ

Why does my gun have no slots?

Basic and Advanced items have none. Superior and above do.

Does a gem get used up?

Yes. Setting a gem consumes it. Taking it out returns the gem for the fee in the table.

Can I set a gem in a Store gun?

Only if you've unlocked mods for it. A Lifetime store gun without mods is refused.

Where do I trade gems I don't need?

The Mine Merchant buys Rough, Flawed and Fine gems.
